This warm tonic is a hug in a mug, perfect for those days when you need an extra boost for your immune system or just a moment of comfort. Lemon provides Vitamin C and honey soothes the throat, while the warmth helps alleviate congestion.
Prep Time: 2 minutes Cook Time: 3-5 minutes Yields: 1 serving
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (approximately 240 ml) filtered water
- 2 to 3 thin slices of fresh lemon (or 1/4 squeezed lemon)
- 1 to 2 tablespoons honey (adjust to your taste)
- Optional: 1 small piece (about 1-2 cm) fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced or grated
- Optional: 1 pinch of cayenne pepper (for a spicy kick and metabolism boost)
- Optional: 1 sprig of fresh mint for garnish
Instructions:
- Heat Water: In a kettle or small saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
- Prepare Cup: While the water is boiling, place the lemon slices (or squeezed lemon juice) and honey into your mug or heat-resistant glass. If using ginger, add it as well.
- Combine: Pour the hot water over the ingredients in the mug.
- Stir and Infuse: Stir well to dissolve the honey and allow the flavors of the lemon and ginger (if used) to infuse. For a stronger lemon and ginger flavor, let it steep for 2-3 minutes.
- Add Optional Ingredients: If using, add a pinch of cayenne pepper and stir again.
- Serve: Remove ginger slices before drinking if preferred. Garnish with a sprig of mint, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting steam.
Chef's Tips:
- Lemon Intensity: For a more intense lemon flavor, squeeze the lemon slices before adding them or use the juice of half a lemon.
- Type of Honey: Use good quality honey. Raw and local honey is often preferred for its beneficial properties.
- Ginger: Fresh ginger adds a spicy kick and is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The longer it infuses, the stronger the flavor will be.
- Variations:
- Cinnamon: Add a cinnamon stick while heating the water for an aromatic and sweet touch.
- Turmeric: A pinch of turmeric powder (with a pinch of black pepper for better absorption) can enhance anti-inflammatory properties.
- Rosemary/Thyme: A small sprig of fresh rosemary or thyme can add interesting herbaceous notes and additional benefits.
